Emerald Skate

The figure skating program at the Dundalk Ice Dome is extensive and caters to absolute beginners to competitive skaters. For beginning skaters, The Ice Dome continues to offer a 6-week figure skating course called The Emerald Skate program. The Emerald skate program is run by the Irish Ice Skating Association and coached by a team of qualified and licensed coaches offering the skaters the best coaching and opportunity for development. This course is very structured and goal oriented with an exam at the end of the 6-week course. The students are split into groups by level. These groups tend not to hold more than 10-fifteen skaters in it at any time to ensure a productive learning environment.

Though the Emerald skate program is a “figure skating” program it is open to everyone who wants learn the basics of skating. The program follows a very specific 8 level lesson plan. The first 4 levels are basic skating skills including: falling down and getting up, forward and backward skating, and one-foot glides. These skills are necessary for all types of skating, figure skating and hockey alike. The next four levels focus more on actual figure skating “tricks” including: Spirals, bunny hops, spins and a basic jumps. Because these eight levels are the foundation of any figure skater’s career the standard is very high and the skaters will be expected to perfect each element before they can more on to the next level. With that said, skaters will not be expected to pass all eight levels in their first 6 weeks. Most skaters pass the first three or four levels after their first set of lessons. The following levels may take a bit longer to pass, as the elements are much harder. Therefore the skaters are invited to take the 6-week course as many times as they would like until they pass all of the eight levels. All skaters involved in the figure skating program will be invited to take part in skating shows, including the Annual Christmas show and Spring show.

Jr. Skate Program

Once a skater has passed through all eight levels of The Emerald Skate program, they may opt to enter The Junior Skate School. The Jr. Skate School is a program where skaters further develop their basic skills and begin to get a taste of competitive training regimes through the coaching of ISAI National Test Structure Licensed Coaches Chynna Pope, Amanda Duncun, and Donna Mackey. The focus of this course is to help the skaters become more confident with their existing skills and to teach them more complicated moves to bring them to the next level. In this course skaters will learn the necessary skills and techniques to achieve certificates in The National Test Structure starting with the Pre-Bronze Certificate. This course runs in 6-week increments for an hour a week. At the end of this six-week course NTS test sessions are run. Only Skaters put forward by a NTS licensed coach may participate in the test session.
